Florida Birds
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron:
Nyctanassa violacea Order CICONIIFORMES - Family ARDEIDAE
This small heron frequents the southern coastal areas and swamps of the US and is considered noctural. In the summer it breeds along the Atlantic coast from New York to Florida and along the large river systems in the central US to Kansas and Indiana. The summer range extends to South America. The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron is found along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts in the winter and is, in fact, a year round resident of Florida. This specimen was observed on sultry April morning on a dock near the ICW in NE Broward County, FL.
